Buxton Spa & Crescent: Audience Development Plan, Interpretive Strategy and Business Plan
For Danubius, High Peak Borough Council, Derbyshire County Council

The Brief:

  • Support HLF bid by public-private sector partnership to restore Buxton’s Spa buildings and to develop a major resort hotel in the Grade II listed Georgian Crescent
  • Costing more than £20 million, it represents perhaps the most important regeneration project in the Peak District in recent years
  • Included provision for an interpretive facility and relocated TIC so that visitors can gain a better understanding of Buxton’s spa heritage

Our Solutions:

  • Interpretive strategy and marketing proposals to target a wide range of audiences including local residents, day visitors and tourists staying in and around the Peak District.
  • Our audience development plan identified how hard-to-reach groups will be encouraged to visit the Crescent and engage with the built heritage
  • The Visitor Centre business plan presented a clear case for public sector seed-funding with analysis of the long-term impact on the local economy, generating much needed jobs as well as an enhanced visitor experience.

The Result:

September 2006: HLF Stage 2 Pass awarded.

‘ Finalising the funding has been a major milestone and we are very grateful for PLB’s help in putting together some exciting and original proposals to interpret Buxton’s spa heritage. The Crescent and Thermal Spa Project will make a huge contribution to the heritage-led regeneration of Buxton’

Richard Tuffrey – Business Manager, Planning Policy & Design, High Peak Borough Council.
