Business Plan and Activity Plan – Round 2 bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund.
for The Old Chapel, Upminster
Client: The Sacred Heart of Mary Girl’s School, Upminster
Location: North Yorkshire
with Tourism UK
- The Old Chapel is one of the few surviving buildings from the former village of Upminster. It was built by a breakaway group of Protestant Reformers around 1800 and, after continuous use dwindled in the late 20th century, was acquired by the neighbouring Girl’s School, having been on the Heritage at Risk register for some years.
To find an appropriate, viable role for the Old Chapel as a community heritage resource, events space and learning provider to complement the existing offer in the locality. We also had to strike a careful balance between proposals for public access, schools use and community hire to maximise the Old Chapel's potential.
- PLB undertook a market appraisal, comparator review and strategic review to understand the potential for the Old Chapel and its fit within the wider Havering offer. We then undertook extensive workshops and consultations with a wide range of stakeholders, heritage interest groups and the local business community.
- Making initial approaches to key partners and then following up in detailed round table discussions, we were able to develop ideas into practical suggestions that the diverse partners could sign-up to.
- The interrelated Activity Plan and Business Plan supported the School in achieving a successful Round 2 pass in March 2011.
