Background:

• Binchester Roman Fort is a unique part of Durham’s heritage, a Roman fort and Bathhouse with a wealth of archaeological interest. PLB were briefed to examine the options to expand the site’s tourism potential for the Bishop Auckland area and raise the profile of Dere Street and its connection with Hadrian’s Wall

Our solutions:

• Working with architects, Purcell Miller Tritton, we devised a range of potential options for future sustainable development at the site
• Options identified to benefit regional archaeological agendas, the local tourism economy and educational and recreational demand
• We looked at ways of community involvement and working in partnership to overcome challenges of resourcing and low marketing profile
