PLB worked with the Tank Museum project team to achieve a successful HLF bid and £15.4 million redevelopment, which was formally opened in June 2009. The stunning new 4,000 sq.m building now showcases 35 key vehicles from the museum’s collection, along with 148 tanks that are displayed in the Discovery Centre.
The redevelopment and reinterpretation of the museum and its designated collections greatly expands the museum’s offer to its visitors as well as increasing access to the collections.
Our approach breaks down the barriers of the technical and military subject of armoured manoeuvre warfare and establishes the social and historical context to the tank development. The experiences of the people – soldiers and civilians, politicians and designers – are central to the chronological presentation within the new exhibition space. Educational links have been integrated with the interpretive approach, ensuring that the displays work for school groups, experts and visitors of all ages.
