HLF funding success for Fusilier Museum development project

Fusilier Museum, Bury

The Fusilier Museum in Bury has secured a grant of £815,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for its ‘Onwards and Upwards’ project.

PLB supported the Fusilier Museum’s HLF application to progress the ‘Onwards and Upwards’ project which will see the opening of the first floor of the building as an accessible museum store alongside a space for more events, activities and educational programmes.

The Fusilier Museum is home to the collections of The Lancashire Fusiliers and the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. Documenting over 300 years of history and heritage through permanent and temporary exhibitions, the museum tells the rich and fascinating stories of the people who have served and continue to service in the regiments.

Through the project, the Fusilier Museum will offer a wider range of learning and participation opportunities to a more diverse range of people. This will support Bury’s cultural quarter and the project team will work with local and regional partners to ensure the museum’s collection reaches a wider audience.

PLB’s work included the development of an activity plan which used market analysis and consultations to establish potential and target audiences, understand barriers to access and identify a range of activities. Consultations have included focus groups with teachers, youth groups, families, ethnic minorities, volunteers and the museum staff.

The funded development work is due to start in January 2014 and is expected to be completed by September 2014. The Fusilier Museum will launch a fundraising campaign to help secure match funding of £600,000.
